The German Army has received the first two of 56 All Protected Carrier Vehicles from Krauss Maffei Wegmann. These are 4x4 UNIMOG 1550L trucks fitted with extensive armor designed to protect the five crewmen from small arms, fragments, and mines (including anti-tank mines). The vehicle weighs eight metric tons including a payload of 1.4 metric tons. All of these vehicles will be used by peacekeeping units for patrols in dangerous areas. The vehicle mounts a 7.62mm MG3 machinegun in an armored mount on top of the cab; the gunner remains entirely under armor. The vehicle has air conditioning, heating, anti-skid brakes, global positioning system, run-flat fires, radios, and a television camera so the driver can operate the vehicle in reverse.--Stephen V Cole
