The Clinton Administration has announced plans to increase defense spending in 2002 by $16 billion, pushing the total beyond $300 billion for the first time in a decade. Republicans are crying foul, saying that this is a campaign stunt to defuse the campaign for the presidency by George W Bush, and that the planned increase will disappear if Vice President Gore is elected.--Stephen V Cole
