President Mohammad Khatami won reelection over his nine conservative opponents with 77 percent of the vote. This was higher than the 70 percent of the vote he obtained last time. But this time, a third of the electorate did not even bother to vote. Unrest is growing over the oppressive and corrupt actions of the courts and police controlled by religious conservatives.
