Over the weekend, the troops on Basilan have used their new police powers to arrest over a hundred suspects in a series of raids on areas known to hold Abu Sayyaf sympathizers. . About a third of these were quickly released because of weak evidence. The increased pressure has been working, although in one incident, an Abu Sayyaf member resisted arrest, leaving the rebel dead, and three civilians and a marine wounded.
